Freeze on installation

Asked by Gavin Buerk

I am having trouble installing XUbuntu on a brand new system.

I am attempting to install XUbuntu 10.04. Each time I try, the installation freezes somewhere between 45% and 55%. When it freezes, nothing happens. The screen does not change, the mouse will not move, the CD drive I'm using to install stops. The only thing I can do is hard shut down. I have tried using the direct install instruction from the boot menu, as well as installing after booting into the live cd (which works great, by the way). I get the same results regardless.

This new system is an Intel G43 Express Chipset with a 64-bit Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q8300 (2.5GHz).

I can't even figure out how to tail a log to find out what it's working on when it fails.

Please advise

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you check the CD for defects once booted to the CD?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as you could?

Thank you for replying. Since reading your response, I went through the following steps.
1. Re-Downloaded the .iso
2. Ran the md5 check sum. The sum checked out as specified on the XUbuntu web site.
3. Re-burned the image to disc (a new disc). I burned at 16x which is as slow as I could.
4. Ran disc check from the XUbuntu boot menu. No issues.
5. Attempted another install.

The exact same issue happened. The install froze at 49%.

Any other suggestions?

Check RAM for errors. If all is well:

Thank you for responding. Here's my update.

I was able to get XUbuntu installed, finally. Twice, in fact, but I still have no idea what was wrong.

After testing my memory (successfully), I followed the link for boot options. I learned about the possibility of ACPI issues, so I attempted an install again with the acpi=off flag set. This time it worked! I was sure that was the solution.

Later, after installing and removing several apps and messing with several OS files, I decided to reinstall from the CD (why not, I figured out the problem and shouldn't run into it again....)

It failed, the same way it had before. I tried 5 more times thinking about how I KNOW this just worked this morning... nothing.

Finally, the 6th time.... it just worked.

I guess I've learned my lesson not to attempt a reinstall. Just thought I'd document my experience.

On a happy note, since it's been up and running, the install is fantastic. Everything works perfectly. I'm still a huge fan of Ubuntu and XUbuntu.
