Virgin Broadband

Asked by Robert Gardella

I am trying to get my Virgin Broadband USB modem to work with Ubuntu 10.04. I am new to linux so be specific with your instructions. I have already gotten the modem to work on windows XP and now want to get it to work on linux. I insert it and the software sees it, but I don't know what to do next. Novatel says it will work but Virgin says no. Can anyone help?

If your system has an ethernet port and the modem has an etherbet port then I suggest you use that.

If you MUST use crappy USB then can you give the output of:

lsusb

Thanks.

I don't want to use an ethernet port. I know that is better but I need to be able to go places that don't offer that as an option. The modem is a Novatel Wireless MC760.

Try installing usb-modeswitch:

sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch

and after that create new connection in System>Prefrences>Network Connections>Mobile Broadband.

It works now. I don't know why but it started working all by it's self. I now boot the machine and insert the modem and wait about 10 seconds and it works fine.
Thanks for your help.
