Delete Windows and install Ubuntu instead

Asked by Andre

Hi
I have an old Dell latitude D610 laptop with Windows XP. It runs like a dog and is not fit for purpose and one of my friends said I should install Ubuntu. If I only want Ubuntu on the laptop and not Windows, how do I delete Windows completely and only have Ubuntu? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated !
Many thanks in advance,
Andre

Hi, I also have a Dell610 laptop and you'll be pleased to know that I found it runs Ubuntu just great and I found everything worked first time. Heres what you need to do (assuming you dont need any data from the disc)

1. Download the Ubuntu desktop i386 edition from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
2. Burn the ISO image follow the guide on that page
3. Boot the machine hitting F12 for the boot device selection menu
4. Pop the cd into the drive and select to boot from CD
5. At the first selection screen choose install Ubuntu (you can also choose try without installing to get a feel for it)
6. Once you run the installer just follow the prompts until you get to the disc paritioning part, to use the whole disc just choose the option to "erase and use entire disc"
7. Follow the rest of the installer procedure, its very straighforward

Note the link above in #1 gives good examples of the install process under the "Install it" section

The Ubuntu installer will give you the option to "Use The Entire DIsk" that option will erase and format the disk. So you have to boot the Ubuntu CD and follow the guide.
