I need it to be saved as ms word doc.

When I type a letter in openoffice it saves it as ODT doc.
I then click save as and click window 95 word doc. but it will not do the conversion

In openoffice, open preferences from menu Tools->Options.

In Load/Save->General, you can set default type for each type of document.
