Questions about plugins of media files and How to get authority to write files into other harddisks

Asked by Dacaop

Hi,

I just install Ubuntu(2005 version), when i open a media file (such as mkv or rmvb), it always says:
<There were no decoders found to handle the stream, you might need to install the corresponding plugins>

where could i download those decoders or plugins for rmvb etc.?

And we i use Disks (which configure the system disks), i try to use some files that i was used in Windows XP(I have 2 system now in my computer), but I can only read the files and cannot modify even copy them.

How could i have authorities to write on those disks, and modify files (or i never can?)?

Thank you very much,
cheers,

Tracy~

MKVs will play if you install "libebml-dev" and "libmatroska-dev" using Synaptic Package Manager. This should work, however I cannot find any mkv files to test it on.

To play RMVB, you must install RealPlayer, which is proprietary (non-free). You can download it at http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/r/realplay/realplayer_10.0.7-0.0_i386.deb

If the disks have NTFS filesystems then you can't safely write to them as Microsoft has not released specifications on how the filesystem works.
