bin files, How do i download

Asked by carlallott

This is the first time i have ever used a linux and i really really dont know how to download files. The only thing that i have been able to download is Skype, because it did it automatically after i clicked download. With everything else that i try to download, when i go to download it just says to save to disk, thats the only option (apart from skype which let me choose save to disk or open). Once it has downloaded, it then says; you have chosen to open ...... which is a bin file.
Then it just tries to save it again.

Please tell me what to do? i dont have a clue, i dont understand technical jargan, i dont want to sound thick, but i really dont understand it. Can someone please help?

Could please give an example of what you want to download ?
If you want to install a new application, you don't need to download anything by yourself. Just open "Synaptic" in the launch menu and search for what you want, then click "install"

Hello,

click on the file RealPlayerGold.bin ->save file on disk ->open a terminal (Alt+F2) at the command line enter gnome-terminal -> cd /home/yourusername/downloaddirectory ->chmod u+x RealPlayerGold.bin ->sudo ./RealPlayerGold.bin ->enter your root password ->follow the instructions

ok i am really not meaning to be stupid, but this is what i am doing step by step.
- i find the real player web site
- then i click on the download real player button
- a window opens saying "you have chosen to open Realplayer10Gold.bin, would you like to save this file (and the only options are) cancel or save file
- it then downloads the file after i click save file and the downloads window opens and RealPlayer10Gold.bin is in there with the options of open or remove at the end of the bar (if i click open it just redownloads again)
- the file downloads into my desktop, dont know if its supposed to go there, but there but thats where it ends up.
- now i clicked on the file in my desktop, nothing happens, if i double click on it, then the computer tries to download the file again.
- Anyway i opened the terminal typed in gnome-terminal, (then am i supposed to search with the "run with file" because i can find the realplayer icon, and put it in the terminal bar and click run, but then if i do nothing happens.
- alternatively there's the additional commands that are wrote above, but i tried every combination, i wasnt sure if cd/chmod/sudo were acronyms and if i am supposed to press return between each step.

sorry not to get it, but this is quite hard if you have never done this kind of thing before.

thanks and the instructions are nice to follow, only thing is when i am trying to add the repositories, following the instructions that are given on my system - administration - then it says go to software packages, i have no software packages, i only have software sources and this looks different from what comes up with software packages. What should i do?

Hello,
what do you mean. If you add the repos than open the synaptic package manager and hit the reload button and then you will see the new packages. If you open Add/Remove via the Application button from the gnome panel then you will the the real application name instead of the package names.

what i mean is when i follow the instructions on how to download or install the repositories. The instructions tell me to go to system and then administration and then software properties, on this system it does not have a software properties only a software sources. so how do i download the repos without this?

ok i have got it sorted, thanks alot for all your help, i dont suppose i could ask one more question, the respositories, where do i find the address for them on the web site? For example i want to download amsn, where would i find the repositories for that? somewhere on the web site?

Hello,

there is not a repo for each package. So i do not enter all repos which are available. The first thing i do if i search a packages i use [1][2] this URLs. So you can pick up needed packages and, if you install gdebi via synaptic, you got the choice to install (if your selected file a .deb) or save.

I just switched from vista to inux because i was having problems. This techie guy said linux would be better, but i dont see how when you cant download any programs. should i go back to vista or go to windows? this program is not very user friendly.
