Ubuntu 10.04 Spontaneous Re-boot
Brand new to Ubuntu.
Did a full install on an oldish Dell desktop computer, from a f-disked (empty) hard drive, the second time round, as the first install attempt was interrupted. But still got a message saying some or other applet (I did not write down the error at the time, aargh) has failed, do I want to delete it?
I chose NO.
Ubuntu will randomly just cut out from whatever I'm doing (it's never the same app or action) and show the following on a black screen:
Speech-dispatcher configured for user sessions
*Starting Common Unix Print
System: cupsd [OK]
PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions
*Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt-support [OK]
Checking battery state... [OK]
The above is displayed for two or three seconds, from there the computer tries to shut down / re-boot, but does not manage to do so, instead the computer monitor just keeps resetting (clicks on and off in a continuous cycle). If I then press the computer's power button, it will switch off from there.
Sure this is just a small bug, but have already reinstalled and done all the updates. Do I need to find a previous STABLE version of Ubuntu or what?
Would appreciate your earliest response.
(PS: Apart from that what a great operating system, installed everything itself and is twice as fast as XP it replaces on the same old machine)
