Ubuntu 10.04 Spontaneous Re-boot

Asked by JAQ

Brand new to Ubuntu.
Did a full install on an oldish Dell desktop computer, from a f-disked (empty) hard drive, the second time round, as the first install attempt was interrupted. But still got a message saying some or other applet (I did not write down the error at the time, aargh) has failed, do I want to delete it?
I chose NO.

Ubuntu will randomly just cut out from whatever I'm doing (it's never the same app or action) and show the following on a black screen:

Speech-dispatcher configured for user sessions

*Starting Common Unix Print

System: cupsd [OK]

PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions

*Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt-support [OK]

Checking battery state... [OK]

The above is displayed for two or three seconds, from there the computer tries to shut down / re-boot, but does not manage to do so, instead the computer monitor just keeps resetting (clicks on and off in a continuous cycle). If I then press the computer's power button, it will switch off from there.

Sure this is just a small bug, but have already reinstalled and done all the updates. Do I need to find a previous STABLE version of Ubuntu or what?

Would appreciate your earliest response.

(PS: Apart from that what a great operating system, installed everything itself and is twice as fast as XP it replaces on the same old machine)

"Checking battery state... [OK]" => You have a graphic card driver problem!

When you boot, you should have a menu (else hold SHIFT key yo get it).
The second line should be: Linux with recovery.
In this mode, the graphic card is used with a restricted set of functionalities, and is more stable.
System->Preferences->Appearances, panel Visual Effects, choose None
System->Administration->Hardware Driver, if you can choose between free and proprietary driver, try which one is not installed.
And what is your Graphic Card ?

Hi Delance,

Didn't manage to successfully boot into recovery mode, only get a black screen by choosing the Low Graphics option.
Other graphic options don't seem to respond at all.

Have been able to boot normally though, Ubuntu has been up for about an hour now without crashing.
Have been trying to get as much info about the problem as possible, seems there are issues with my machine's graphics chipset:
Intel 82845G/GL Brookdale

Haven't been able to find anyone that has had success with Ubuntu and this Intel chip, and most of what is written in those threads are way above my head as I'm brand new to Ubuntu / Linux and have no technical experience with it.

Visual effects have been set to None from the start.
When going to Hardware Drivers, it simply states: No proprietary drivers are in use on this system.
(The list is empty, with nothing that can be enabled)

Please tell me there is something to be done about this with my limited knowledge, as I really don't want to return to Windows. I'm so not in the mood for Microsoft anymore...

A simple question here, does the machine boot and run ok with the live CD? i.e. insert the CD, choose "try without installing"?

Hi Bytesoup,

Had the same problem with the CD, in fact it wouldn't even load completely before it cut out.

But the computer has been running uninterrupted since yesterday morning.
I've made sure that all the power options are set NOT to turn off the monitor or put the computer to sleep.
I've set the screensaver NOT to come on, turned off all visualisation effects as suggested etc.

It seems to be OK now.
I hope it remains so.

i have this same problem. it is quite annoying, in the middle of something it will randomly go to this screen. however mine does not reboot most times and instead it hangs and tries to reboot several times with no avail. I have only used linux for about a week now. so far ubuntu is great... except for this bug.

Marco is not rude. Simply when we ask list of pending question, we ask to Launchap "Open" and sometimes "Answered" and "Ask for information", but never "Solved" question. So only people who subscribed the question will see it. So please, open a new question. If you want, you can refer to old question in your post.
But "Solved" means "Dead and forgotten"
