RESURECTING THE DEAD - IN KUBUNTU - getting ADEPT to life

Asked by Piet Beukes

Hi, I did a complete install of a Kubuntu CD (Kubuntu 7.04, which I ripped at a PC shop at a kiosk) on my laptop. It fully installed. The whole of Linux Kubuntu works fine including wireless networking and surfing the web, EXEPT for the fact that I cannot get the Adept Installer file (for updating on the net) to work. When I open the Adept file, it shows which items are ticked and alive on the laptop by highlighting them in a darker shade of gray and it also shows the other not-ticked files which I could download, by giving them in faint or lighter gray. However, there is no way I can pursuade the Adept file to mark the non-ticked, light gray items, for the purpose of downloading them from the net. There's a many a file I would love to download in this manner using Adept (which is the packaged file of choice on the Kubuntu CD which I have installed). In Ubuntu, there was a similar file which worked very well, updating anything which I needed or wanted - it even told me that there were stuff to download..

By the way, I know I can download stuff by going to search for it on the net myself - but that is not the ideal way this should work (I think, given that Adept Installer was installed in the first place). I also do not know anything about programming - I am a gui person and have tried to install stuff by using a terminal window - unsucsessfully. I do not even know where to install stuff in linux - in MS windows I know it always/mostly installed in the 'program' area.

A few questions here:
1 should I try to download a Kubuntu 7.04 fix/patch after having installed the K 7.04 package? - is something like that even available for the Kubuntu package? If available, what is it called and how/where do I get it?
2 is this a common problem with the Kubuntu 7.04 download that the adept file does not work?
3 MAIN QUESTION: what can I do to resurect the Adept file on my laptop? The file in full is called Adept Installer 2.1 Cruiser, using KDE 3.5.6
4 if in an extreme case i do need to install something on my laptop, where should i put it - in which branch?
5 is there an easy way to install any program which I need to install?

Any help would be appreciated - perhaps I have just overlooked something?
