xubuntu install problem sony vaio

Asked by RobertD

Have attempted to install xubuntu 7.04 on Sony Vaio PCG FX101 with 192MB RAM 600mhz Celeron processor using alternate install image CD. First attempt hung after main menu page. Then added "acpi=off" at end of boot command using F6. At next screen next to flashing cursor added same command "acpi=off". Installation then appeared to run satisfactorily. On rebooting long delays and finally no screen display. Just blank screen. Repeated reboot deleting "acpi=off" from boot line but same result still no video display at all. Have reinstalled checked that video resolution is compatible with Sony VAIO. Help please!

i think sony doesn't like linux......
you could go to a cyber-cafe and order kubuntu....
WAIT you have 192 mb ram?!
ouch.....better go to windows, man.....
but, i think.....WHAAAAT?! you have a 600 mhz?!
how the heck do you want to install ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, edubuntu on that c**ppy
computer????????
you better go to buy a new computer...............because now they're cheap, and they give you many performance, friend.. but, if your computer is usable, download xubuntu again, FROM FIREFOX. =)

Solved the problem by deleting the reference to splash in the boot line. Web searching reveals this is a problem with VAIOs. Now works very nicely.

I have a sony Vaio PCG-FX170 -> 512mb RAM and 800Mhz PIII
I'm having a similar problem, I did get Xubuntu installed with the Regular CD, but with Safe Graphics mode on and "acpi=off"
but now when I boot up, I get whether to run in regular kernel mode or "safe" or do a mem Test, but no matter what I select I do not get a sucessful boot up into Xubuntu.
I get a blank screen with a white cursor, I've even said no quit splash and "acpi=off"
Do I need to take out the "splash quite" altogether?

Thanks
