new instalation bootup

Asked by jasperpad

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop (its an AMD 64 Athlon x2) 2 GB memory and 250 C drive.

I downloaded the program and created the DVD disk, then continued to install.

the computer didn't install at first but went to the desktop and I then continued to complete the installation from the desktop.

I downloaded the update (299 of them) and checked that I could get online which I did. I then had to re-boot to complete the installation of the downloads and the computer would not boot up showing the following message:

"reboot and select proper boot device
insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

I pressed a key and got the same message, any idea what could be wrong? I would prefer not to have to re install the program again unless I have to.

the system is as already stated:

Athlon 64 x2
2 Gb RAM
250 C drive
Two other drives: 300Gb ata and 500 sata both not connected yet.
Pioneer DVD RW

(I am using my laptop for this message also using Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit).

kindest regards

George

I recommend you boot to liveCD and reinstall grub2, You should then test. If it's no good then boot to liveCD again to chroot to the installed system to then review the grub configuration.

Hi Thanks for the info, where do I find grub2 and/or chroot?

I have a feeling I may need a "clean disc to installed everything even though I have down loaded the program from this site.

any other ideas will be very welcome

If you are not sure, can you type:
    sudo parted -l
and post result (and eventually explains what partition contains), so I can help you.

Sounds like you have to configure your BIOS settings.
