Windows XP crashed (no setup cd). Can I install Ubuntu?

Asked by joseph Fedor

Received the message "windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt" after turning desktop on after returning from vacation. Do not have the setup cd to repair and can not find XP available anywhere (all Windows 7). Safe mode and Last known good configuration brings back the same message. I would like to avoid Windows if at all possible, so I have two questions...

1) Could I install Ubuntu from a flash drive and bypass this Windows registry problem altogether?
2) I can not do anything on the PC, but I do have a Macbook in perfect working order. Could I download Ubuntu to the flashdrive from the Mac for use on the PC?

Thanks for your help

Why don't you install Ubuntu from the CD?
Your message looks like that your Windows is broken and not your cd-drive.

CD or flash drive - doesn't matter. I just need to know if I can bypass the Windows issue by installing Ubuntu and can I save it to the cd/flash on the Mac and install on the PC without any problems?

Yes red here on howto create the cd read the mac section: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
Please download the cd using torrents (better error verify on download) from here: http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/

Select the ubuntu desktop 32bits name: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso

also if your pc is a 64bits processor and you will be fine.
