Ubuntu recognize hard drive with windows on installation

Hi, I am trying to Install Ubuntu 10.04 lts on 300 gb hard drive with windows 7 on it. I know my Win 7 is in the ntfs format and only using 150 gb of the 300 hundred and I formated the rest of the hard drive using a linux live cd in ext 4. I start the Install and when i get to the part where i need to choose the partition to put linux on it doesnt recognize the hard drive. Can anyone tell me why? I am using a maxtor hard drive could that be why?
