Asked by Omer

On ubuntu 6.06 LTS - the Dapper Drake - released in June 2006, at software preferences and after stage of "downloading package information" i get message as follows

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

Were you able to download and install applications until now?
Do you have an active internet connection while doing this?
Do you connect to the internet through a proxy?

It could be a temporary problem with your connection or the servers (just checked now and they are on line).

Can you open a terminal (Menu->Accessories->Terminal) and give these commands:

ping gb.archive.ubuntu.com
ping archive.ubuntu.com
ping 192.168.1.1

(you can interrupt with ctrl+C).

What is the result?
Can you check the content of your /etc/resolv.conf file (if any)?

This can actually be many things, perhaps its a problem with ipv6 not correctly handled by your router/ISP.
I really need to check what is in your resolv.conf (you failed to provide it above).
Use this command:

cat /etc/resolv.conf

Thats just your router's IP, if your router is not enabled as a DNS server than I don't think its OK.
Try finding out what servers your ISP provides for DNS lookup, delete 192.168.1.1 and add their IP to the list.
For instance, if your ISP is providing these DNSs:

85.37.17.16
85.38.28.68

then edit your /etc/resolv.conf to look like this:

nameserver 85.37.17.16
nameserver 85.38.28.68

Remember that you need to edit this file as a superuser.

I hope this can help.

Hello Omer.

Perhaps you can try "sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf" and then save the changed file.

Many linux distributions are supposed to be good options for home users. Every distro can have its pros and cons.
For a start though, Ubuntu is one of the well known to be user friendly distributions out there, if not the friendliest.
Take a look at the links below too:

Have a nice day.

Omer,

as much as we love you, you can't keep a question ticket open forever and keep adding questions to it.
If your original question was solved, please mark this as solved and fell free to open as much remaining questions you have (one per ticket is best).

Hi I'm facing the same problem.
But, my DNS seems to work fine as I'm able to browse.
The problem is whenever I try to download package information through synaptic, I get timed out erros.
when I try to ping any of the URLs like: http://security.ubuntu.com,
I get the message saying 'unknown host'. But other URLs can be ping-ed without problems.
I have modified the /etc/apt/sources.list as below -

## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.
