Digital Photo Frame compatible with Linux?

Asked by NakiMum

Got a digital photo frame as a gift, but once again it seems only compatible with windoze.
Anyway, it does show AutoDPFMate_50 on my desktop and in Places just under Computer.
I've tried installing the DPFMate-exe file using Wine (I've got Ubuntu 10.04, so Wine is the latest). I get this error message:

The file '/media/AutoDPFMate_50/DPFMate.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.

When I right-click and select to make file executable, I get this error:
Sorry, could not change the permissions of "DPFMate.exe": Error setting permissions: Read-only file system

It's a read-only file that I can't use. Is there a way for me to load pictures on this? It would make a rather fantastic desk ornament for my hubby with pics of his darling little angelic daughter on it (tehehehe).

TIA

Hello!

What's the brand and model for this photoframe ?
Does it have an internal memory? Or should it stay connected to a computer to get the photos?

Hi there Francois
It's a Goldair KPF 1.5"LCD screen.
16MB Memory (approx 100 photos).
To get the photos loaded and to charge the frame it has to be connected to the computer via usb cable (which I do have).

Cheers
Tanya

Ok, I did some researches on internet, this one sounds tricky...
The photoframe apparently does not show its internal storage, but instead simulate a CDrom when u plug it to the computer. The file on it is just to install the software on Windows, and as it's a CD, it's read only. Maybe it's possible to run it in Wine, but I'm not sure if it would still be able to communicate with the photoframe easily.

Other solution: if the computer is fast enough, you can use Virtualbox to have a virtualized windows XP. The version that you can download on virtualbox.org can connect to USB devices if you set them properly.

I think that's more or less the only solutions for the moment.

Hi there Francois
thanks for your time & research. I was doing the same on the internet and came to the same conclusion. It's seen as a cd and is this read only. Pity though.
I'd rather just put it in a box until I (one day) buy a new laptop/netbook that has windows on it. I'm really not going to virtualize windows & still have to pay for it LOL. I've weaned myself off that.

Thanks anyway. At least it's something that I don't have to use.
Cheers

The permission denied error, can be worked around by copying DPFMate.exe from the keychain onto hard drive, and changing permissions modes. But running it with WINE (from the 10.04 repositories on 10.04) got fatal error:

  wine bin/DPFMate.exe

err:module:import_dll Library MFC42u.DLL (which is needed by L"Z:\\home\\user\\bin\\DPFMate.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\\home\\user\\bin\\DPFMate.exe" failed, status c0000135

It mounts as /dev/srN (cd-rom). I was wondering if anyone could comment on whether it might be possible to induce Linux to use /dev/sgN (cdrw) instead. But if that only exposes the platform-specific executables, and not the photo storage area, then it will not help so much.
