Problems Installing Ubuntu.

Asked by colbuff

I just installed a new ATA hard drive which BIOS recognizes. I was using a Ubuntu i386 Desktop 6.10 CD to upload Ubuntu onto my Toshiba.

- 366MZ Celeron (it is old)
- New hard drive ATA 10GB

Here's the thing. I use the CD installer I have and it starts to install but then the monitor goes blank. I downloaded the alternative CD (6.06 LTS, desktop edition, standard personal computer) but the CD won't boot up after turning on the computer as the other CD installer did.

(1) How can I solve the blank screen problem when loading ubuntu? I tried a couple things from other questions that were answered such as : nosplash noapic nolapic : wih no luck.

(2) Why won't my new download which I burned to CD work when trying to boot on the Toshiba at startup?

hey since your system is old you can try out xubuntu a light flavour of ubuntu then after installing xubuntu you can install ubuntu updates perfect for low end systems... xubuntu system requirements are:
To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only required you to have 64 MB RAM.

To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to use at least 128 MB RAM

Xubuntu can be downloaded from:
http://www.xubuntu.org/get
Hope it helps,
Bhavani Shankar.

1) I downloaded [ ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386 ] to my Dell computer.

2) And then I made a image copy using Sonic's RecordNow.

3) Then I made an exact copy to a blank 700MB CD.

4) Then when I place the CD in the CD drive. I just kept getting ran in circles. Here's what I mean : When I clicked on Open CD a Small window came up giving me a choice to either :
a) Save [ ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386 ] OR

b) Open [ ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386 ] with a choice of opening it via Soni's RecordNow Or Mozilla Firefox ; my browser of choice.

* Since I didn't need to save what I already have, I tried opening it using Sonic's RecordNow and Mozilla Firefox.

- Sonic's RecordNow got me no where
- Mozilla Firefox took me right back to the small Save or Open window.

I would appreciate your help. I am totally new to this Ubuntu.
