Windows Setting in Kubuntu 10.04 made my monitor display go blank!

Asked by John A. Jones

Dear Sirs - Support Kubuntu;
I have a Gateway Solo 1450 Laptop with an Intel 1.2 MHz CPU, Single Core, with 768 MB RAM, 20GB HD, DVD-CD ROM, Floppy A: drive. Wanting to dual boot Kubuntu and WinXP Home with SP 3.0, I installed Kubuntu Linux, 9.4 on the remainder of my hard drive unformatted (about 5GB's), and the screen flickered the whole time but finally booted into the flickering KDE Desktop upon login and password - using the VGA-771 option to install. After logging on and into the KDE Windows Desktop, the screen continued to flicker and was off to the right so I had to click the mouse pointer abit to the left in order to click the applications and etc. properly. The option to upgrade to version 10.0.0.4 came through the Internet, and I was able to click on the upgrade with much difficulty. After the upgrade downloaded and installed, and rebooted, the monitor worked perfectly! However, when I went into the Display Settings and checked on the "Turn on Windows Display Effects" and clicked on "APPLY", my monitor went blank and did all sorts of crazy things. Right now I am trying to re-install Kubuntu 9.4, then upgrade to version 10.0.0.4 again through the Internet to get the same results with my monitor, BUT the same thing will happen if I apply the "Turn on Windows Effects" in the Display Properties in the system settings - which I do not plan to do! But this enabling of these settings should not have caused my monitor to go blank and my having to go through this whole process again! The Display adapters are made by Intel and are double drivers for number display number 1 and display number number 2, and this problem really needs to be addressed! Please help and advise! Thank you so much for you time, prompt response and assistance regarding this matter!

Sincerely, John A. Jones - <email address hidden>

PS. If you need further information I will be happy to provide...as there was no information regarding Gateway Solo 1450 Laptops here in your user discussions as I searched for this specifically.

can you post:
lspci -vv

Since it is a low-end laptop the Window effects may slow down the machine and even stop the display. Before enabling the desktop effects. Type this in a terminal:

glxinfo | grep Yes

If you get
direct rendering: Yes

Then the machine is a capable of "Turn on Windows Effects"

BTW even if you enable "Turn on Windows Effects". Wait for 10 seconds, it will revert back to "Turn off window effects "

Dear biophysics,
(Issue 1): I downloaded the regular updated 10.0.4 version of KUbuntu and re-installed...the updated version worked when I installed with the VGA=711 and TASKS-Kubuntu-Desktp options. I've saved your mail above and will keep it for future reference. Also, the "Turn on Windows Effects" never reverted back after 10 seconds, as I waited for over 30 seconds. Somehow, something must've messed up the hardware so it was not able too.

I do have another question that I cannot find an answer to in the manual, help, or other resources:

(Question 2): I am dual booting Kubuntu with Windows XP and using the Grub boot loader. It mentions that I can press Enter to boot, Press e to edit, or press Control-x to boot after editing....and that it uses minimum Pico text editing, but I cannot find a way to change the boot order. I want Windows XP to be the default rather than the most upgraded version of Kubuntu Linux. How do I change the default boot order to Windows XP?
I sure appreciate your help, assistance and quick response!
Thank you!
Sioncerely,
John A. Jones
