how to install vista over ubuntu without harming grub

i wish to install vista over ubuntu without harming GRUB and ubuntu is there any easy way to do it?

Hello Rahim,

if you install Vista after Ubuntu, then Vista will overwrite the boot record from Ubuntu. You cannot prevent that.

The trick is, you can re-install the Ubuntu boot record after you have installed Vista. I used the "rescue mode" on the alternate Ubuntu CD to do this, but I think it will also work with "live session" from a standard CD.
The instructions given in the first part of http://www.sorgonet.com/linux/grubrestore/ helped me to get the boot record re-installed.
Please note the exact instructions to use depend on your hard-disk configuration, so please make sure you use the right values for your system!
