Can Dapper Drake Server be set up to run on GUI mode ?

Asked by Clemo

Hi all ! I am a bit of a newbie in linux. I am thoroughly comfortable with Ubuntu linux, but this is because its mainly GUI (graphical). But i have installed Dapper Drake Server as i want to run some server services like firewall, mail and proxy. I discovered that the server version is based on command line ! Is there a way i can change it to GUI so that it can be a bit easier for me to get my way round ?

There is, however you should remember that desktop packages only have 3 years support rather than 5 years servers do.

Also traditionally GUIs aren't used on servers because it increases the likelihood of security holes.

To get a gui install either the ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktop package depending on which one you usually use.

And to add, if you're expecting GUI tools for the server, there is none at the moment, with the exception of some GNOME-based tools that are not that much...so most of the stuff to configure will still be configured in the terminal, or you can probably try installing something like Webmin if you're ok with web-based administration.
