Install and remove is broken

Asked by Mark Cincoski

My battery died while I was installing Imagej. After I rebooted, I could no longer install anything, nor could I access Synaptic Package Manager. When I try to run Synaptic I get an error message saying:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I opened Terminal to do that and it didn't work. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this.
Thanks for your time

Mark,

Open a terminal and try running the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" again.

Good luck,
George

This doesn't actually work and when I try it I get a message in terminal.
It says "dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0040' near line 0: MSDOS EOF (^Z) in field name`'

Anyone got something for that?

I followed the link above, some had the exact same problem as me. If anyone else loses power while installing, go to http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1436246.html
If you read through that you will find what you need to fix the problem. Thank you actionparsnip and I hope that this will help more people.
