installing d2 ubuntu 10.4

Asked by Alex

in 10.4 using wine 1.2 when trying to install D2 get error message that setup.exe is not flagged as a runnable file and its ubuntu policy not to allow such files to run. As CD is (of course) fixed I cannot change properties to make it "runnable". If I try and copy setup disc to PC, I can then change the runnable attribute but then asked for setup CD to be in drive (which it is) but doesn't recognise that its in the drive.

There seems to be no way to override this exclusion. In previous versions of Ubuntu this was never an issue.

Can you expand D2. I can think of about 50 games you could possibly mean. Abbreviating things in forums just slows things down as folks like me will always ask for clarification so the information given later is accurate rather than based on guesswork.

Seems it just works. Get the wine version discussed (you may need the wine ppa) and apparently it plays with slightly delayed sound.

Hi - I still cant get Diablo 2 installed.

The issue is this: I right-click the setup.exe (or the install.exe) file on install disc and then click on Open With Wine Window Program Loader. I then get an error message: The file '/media/INSTALL/setup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.

Its not possible to change that "bit" as the CD ROM is, of course, fixed. I cant find any override for this to force the file to be executed

In previous versions of Ubuntu I never had this error message and when I followed the above sequence WINE just executed the setup or install exe file and installation was just as if it was under windows.

I guess, for some reason, 10.4 doesnt allow such files to be executed.

At the moment the only thing I can think of is to format the HD and install Ubuntu 9.04, install Diablo 2 and then update to Ubuntu 10.4 - but thats quite some performance...

You may have to copy the data as you cannot mark the file as executable as the file is on a CD.

Can you help with this problem?
