How can i improve the performance of my ati video card?

I'm running ubuntu 7.04 64 bit and i have a ATI Mobility Radeon X1150 video card.
i want to improve video performance and i'll try anything that would yield better performance even recompiling kernel.

the ATI propiatary drivers are well known for not being very good performance wise, but if your determined you can play around with a program called "aticonfig" (type aticonfig in a terminal), also you should make sure you are running with the ati drivers by running the restricted drivers manager
