cannot mount dvd/cdrom ubuntu 9.10 acer aspire 5532

Asked by subliminalfix

the dvd drive suddenly stop working or being recognized i should say on my system

i had previously opened this questioned under

 https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/111584

after giving the output of groups i tried changing the bios to "original "value which showed several logical block errors upon start-up

but indeed did recognize my cd drive. however it would not read the disk and after rebooting has gone back to not recognizing

the drive can someone please assist me i really need this computer to work.. thanks and heres what i can tell you

 otter@pond:~$ sudo mount cdrom
mount: can't find cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

i am puzzled at this because i have opened my /etc/fstab and found it listed if i try this command this is what occurs

otter@pond:~$ sudo mount /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0
mount: /dev/sr0: unknown device

changing the setting to scd0 or sr0 does the same thing

again please and thanks in advance...

Your optical drive seems to have the following names:

logical name: /dev/cdrom
logical name: /dev/cdrw
logical name: /dev/dvd
logical name: /dev/dvdrw
logical name: /dev/scd0
logical name: /dev/sr0

Does any of these names occur in /var/log/syslog

1. during boot

2. when you insert a DVD

?

It is a text file, so use your favorite text editor. Gedit should be fine. Even OpenOffice Word processor is OK if you so wish.

Personally I use the less command from the command line:

$ less /var/log/syslog

but searching for the required strings might not be straight forward for somebody without a longer Unix/Linux background.

Normally syslog is readable for everybody in Ubuntu. Should that not be the case you can use sudo to get around the protections.

Nowadays there is also a graphical syslog viewer available. Then you don't even have to know the exact file name :) I have never used it in Ubuntu (I'm running Kubuntu right now), so I can't tell you the exact location in the menu structure. Nor am I sure whether it existed already in 09.10, I've seen somebody using it in 10.04.

Yes, the groups command was the correct one. The output looks fine. User otter (obviously you) belongs to group cdrom.

i have switched back to my old time favorite for now xfce

i really need a fix on this but for now taking a break

not showing up here either and there isnt a computer option in places here

so limited to trying to find an actual cure as the cdrom folder remains blank

thanks for your time and think of me if you see a patch or a workaround

no the cd was not text in specific. i had backed up all my files to dvd music

documents movies etc and will have to see if i can afford to buy a larger usb

device and goto my public library and transfer everything i need to flash so that i can

use it7.

this is just so depressing and stupid. whats the point of having a touch base g.u.i.

if it will not function. im starting to think with 80,000 plus bugs open in a 2-3 million

user ratio ubuntu has opted out into the garbage heap.

these kind of things never happened in 6.04 - 7.10 what happened??? #FU................K***

what a waste of time and effort

Well this looks like Linux recognizes your drive nicely, but the drives reports that there is no disk in it. If that's the case Linux/Ubuntu cannot do very much.

Have you tried various DVDs and CDs? Is it the same for all of them? What noises does your drive make?

Normally one can hear a couple of loud search movements and after that the drive might accelerate audibly. If there are problems recognizing the disk there will be much more aggressive and repeated search movements. One can typically hear that the drive is trying hard to recognize a readable track on the disk. But the harder its trying the less chances are that it eventually succeeds.

You still haven't reported whether any of your drive's names

logical name: /dev/cdrom
logical name: /dev/cdrw
logical name: /dev/dvd
logical name: /dev/dvdrw
logical name: /dev/scd0
logical name: /dev/sr0

occurs in the system log /var/log/syslog with any interesting message. (Most likely the name /dev/sr0 will be used internally, but you never know)

Can you help with this problem?
