trying to upgrade to 10.04 from 9.10 laptop locks up half way through even when booted from new cd? (ibm R50e thinkpad) with xp home

Asked by raymond taylor

I am running linux 9.10, when I try to upgrade to the new 10.04 my laptop locks up after the part where you enter the keyboard type it just stops working? I have downloaded the file more than once but it still wont work. I am trying to install on to a IBM Thinkpad R50e with 1.5 gig ram. 9.10 works fine apart from no sound via the mic plug!

How are you upgrading? Are you using the web method or the alternate cD method?

Thanks.

Hi :)

Can you use the Cd to boot up a LiveCd session?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
I think this is what you mentioned in the question itself but it was not clear whether you were able to get the Live session working

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

If you can't get a straight LiveCd to work then please try working through combinations of the boot options offered on that page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

With a 1.5GHz cpu and boosted up to 1.5Gb ram this machine 'should' work well with Ubuntu. I suspect the downloading has been going wonky so please md5sum check the Cd and if that fails then md5sum the iso download
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#Check%20the%20CD
if both fail then please download again from
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/

Given the intel graphics and stuff i would guess that it might be worth trying the Netbook Remix to see if that has better drivers and stuff for your machine. I would start with the md5sum checks because that's the fastest thing to do, the boot options might be more fun to try out after that.

Another thing, can you boot into the 9.10 still or is that difficult now? If it is tricky then could you use another machine to download sliTaz to see if that works instead of Ubuntu?
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=slitaz
it is only 30Mb and so it downloads faster and is easier to get a good Cd fromt he download. The sliTaz LiveCd might hopefully work. Either through the 9.10 or sliTaz please could you give us the output of

sudo fdisk -l

so we can see if there is something going wrong there?
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
