MEMTEST86+ Won't Stop Running

Asked by s9393

Karmic 9.10

I've been running the system in question for 5 months with NO issues at all and I did not install or change anything prior to this issue.

I shut the system down and then later powered it on again and MEMTEST86+ runs every time I boot. It goes like this

Grub2

Memtest86+ is triggered

Memtest completes I hit ESC to reboot

BAM!! Grub2 then Memtest86+ again

Please help cause this machine is going out the window soon if I can't solve this!!

Thank you!!

I am NOT able to access any menu at all when the system boots it shows that the grub is loading and then it goes right into memtest every time the only way that I'm able to boot is from a LIVE CD.

hi, try to check if one of your RAM slots is loose or bad connected. try to remove all the RAM memoryes and insert the again

maybe the memtest is triggered because one of the RAM slots is bad connected

hope this can help

Thanks guys for the info. unfortunately none of these suggestions has done the trick. It seems that it is being triggered right off the bat without the system having time to check much. I have removed each piece of hardware in the system one at a time to see if a card failed I also did the same for the RAM none of which made ant difference.

Hi :)

Do you have an Ubuntu Cd? Preferably a 9.10 or 10.04 but any would do just to get to a LiveCd session
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
just to get to a command-line and have a look around. Please give us the output of

sudo fdisk -l

where "-l" is a lower-case "-L". This would give us the information for reinstalling grub2 from 9.10 or 10.04 but it would be interesting to see what happens from an earlier release that still uses grub1 so either way we could find something useful here. Does attempting to get into a LiveCd session also go straight into a MemTest?

I was also wondering what type of machine this is and whether it has been running quite hot for quite a long time? Sometimes the bios give information about how hot the cpu is running which would be handy to check as you are sorting the boot-order to make sure it looks at the Cd/dvd-drive before the hard-drive (to make sure the LiveCd session really is starting up from the right place)

Please let us know!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
