Sound output distorted

Asked by Les Rylett

Output to speakers is distorted. I have removed and loaded the latest alsa driver in Ubuntu 10.04 through the terminal window but the distortion persists.
This is a copy of the extraction from terminal.
I am also a new convert to Ubuntu.

Try dropping all volume sliders to about 75%.This helped mine.

Usually the medibuntu page fixes almost all multimedia but it looks like you have reached step 4 or 5 in the trouble-shooting one? I found that just wobbling the sliders up and down seemed to fix things in Ubuntu 9.04

Library version: 1.0.22
Utilities version: 1.0.22

In case nothing helps, you could experiment by appending modprobe option to alsa-base.conf from section:

To experiment with sound settings open alsamixer in a terminal:

I tried all that was suggested, and thank you all for the help.
Perhaps it is me but nothing worked until I downloaded the latest upgrades sent out with the Ubuntu team.
It could have been a coincidence, but the sound is now perfect.

Hi :)

That is often the way things work in linux-land. Updates do often fix things if they weren't previously working, it is extremely rare for something to get broken by that as almost always the updates add some extra finesse or broadens the range of systems the package can deal with. Almost always it helps a lot if you have poked around trying to fix things even if it's not the poking around that directly fixes the system.
