10.04 Bricked system
Net upgrade to 10.04 Rendered a message at boot:
"grub loading"
Error: no such file
"Grub Rescue"
Also
a prompt which recognizes no commands, and thats it, no matter how long one waits for the system.
so, I tried from the live CD
Renders message:
(process:259:) GLib WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
So now I have a brick.

Your main problem looks like update-grub did not run properly. Rerunning it should solve the problem. But to do so you will have to get a root prompt of your installation. You can get one from the Live CD mounting your root FS to some folder and running:
sudo su
chroot /root_fs_folder /bin/bash
update-grub
This brings us to the other problem: your Live CD.
Te message above is just a warning. GLib warnings are not critical.
Please check the media from the boot menu! You can also try the alternate installation disc or any even any other Linux live CD to get a root prompt with the commands above.

Thanks the alternate (text) installer did the deed.
