Takes a minute or more to get to the BIOS post

Asked by Mario Tomljenović

Here´s what is the problem. I´ve been having Windows 7 on my laptop for a long time. When I first wanted to install Ubuntu on it, it was six months ago. I installed it with Wubi. It worked just fine for the first couple of weeks, but then my problem came up. It took a minute, or even five minutes to even get to the BIOS post on the cold start.

So I flashed BIOS, and still nothing. I deleted Windows, and installed Ubuntu on ext4 partition, but still nothing. So I installed Windows again, and deleted Ubuntu - and my problem was solved. But I didn´t want to have only Windows, so I installed back Ubuntu, not with Wubi, but on ext4 partition. Again, for the first couple of weeks it was all good, but my problem came again. So I´ve been fighting with this problem for a couple of months. Sometimes it takes about 30 seconds to get to the post, but today it took 6 minutes.

Everything goes perfectly when the OS is up, the only problem is on the cold start, as I described.

My laptop is:

Acer eMachines E725
Intel Dual Core T4300 2.1 GHz
2 GB RAM DDR2, 667 MHz
Intel GMA 4500 MHD Graphics
ATA Hitachi HDD HTS54322
BIOS eMachines v3.06
OS: Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala i386, Windows 7 Enterprise x86
Kernel: 2.6.31-21

Please help.

I haven´t tried with any other Linux distribution, so I don´t know if the problem is Linux, or just Ubuntu.

The dmesg will start tracking after the kernel loads so will not take into account the BIOS time. I'd contact eMachines to see whats what. You could log a bug too. I don't know what else to advise, maybe someone else can advise

Yes, I sent email to eMachines support, and they just told me to take my laptop on repair if I have guarranty. I have guarranty, but the problem is I need my laptop for college. And I have bad experience with repairs under guarranty. If I take my laptop on a repair, I will probably wait for a couple of months, and that is too long for me.

Are you sure this could be logged as a bug?

Do you have the latest bios?

And the other problem is: warranty does not cover damages and problems caused by the third party software, including any other operating system except Windows.

As they say:

"Windows®. Life without Walls™. eMachines recommends Windows 7."

They ask us to imagine life without walls, then why would we need Windows?

When I bought laptop, i got BIOS v1.06 on it. Then I upgraded it to v3.06. But the newest version is v3.07.

Today I upgraded BIOS to v3.07, and here´s what happens: I have been turning on my laptop for several times, and for the first time BIOS took 67 seconds to get to the post, the second time it took 59 seconds, the third time it took 56 seconds, the fourth time it took 45 seconds....... and the last time it took 17 seconds. I guess it´s getting better.

I will not mark this question as solved yet, because normal time BIOS takes to get to the post is couple of seconds, and my BIOS still needs plenty of time.

Hi, again.

Today I turned on IDE, instead of AHCI, and there is no waiting any more, but Windows fails to start under IDE. I get BSOD. So I just wonder, how does Ubuntu usually works under AHCI? Because AHCI probably causes my problem. And is there any way to fix it?

Try this boot option:

all-generic-ide

See if it helps

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub; sudo update-grub

find this line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

and change it to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash all-generic-ide"

save the file and close gedit, the grub update will then run and when you reboot the option will be used

You now know how to add bootoptions to Linux.

I did that, but still there is no improvement on the cold start. I still have to wait a lot to see the BIOS post. In few days I will backup all my data on laptop, delete whole HDD, and install again Windows and Ubuntu, but under IDE mode, and will see and write here if anything changes.

Here I am again. Few days ago I have deleted the whole HDD, and made a clean install of Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04, but under IDE mode. I thought that it will solve my problem, but it didn´t.

I wonder if I remove CMOS battery and reset BIOS settings, will it maybe help?
