This happened to me (rarely) while using xubuntu 8.10. Don't know your os or version, but upgrading to xubuntu 10.04 cured this. Have no idea why, but I'll happily take the result.

Hi :)

Do you have an Ubuntu Cd that you can try to use as a LiveCd?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
This should get you a demo version of Ubuntu?

The previous post is here
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+question/110956
to follow Marcobra's suggestions just get to a command-line using this guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal#Starting%20a%20Terminal

But i think an easier way might be to go up to the top taskbar/panel and click on

System - Adminstration - "Synaptic Package Manager"

in there use the "Edit" menu to get a "Fix broken packages". Also click on the "Mark all updates" button and then click on "Apply"
Please let us know how any of this goes!

Tom :)
