Upgrading to 10.4 from 9.2 : after reboot dell m1530 starts up windows with xdm instead of gdm.

Asked by Ted Laurent

Upgraded from Karmic Koala running compiz effects and AWN manager to Lyric Lynx. During upgrade got message regarding Wine 1.2 not being supported. Upgrade completed with no other error messages. After rebooting laptop system starts up X window in xdm. Rebooting in recovery mode, selecting netroot login gets to shell. From shell typing "startx" brings up X window in gdm. From the shell typing "gdm" brings up X window in xdm! I'd really like to get back to starting up in Gnome desktop.

I tried to reinstall gnome desktop from the packager but this didn't seem to have any effect.
Advice would be greatly appreciated, if the only way to resolve this issue is to reinstall from scratch I'll do it but I'm guessing this would be an easy fix to someone with some experience in Ubuntu.

In login window at the bottom you can select witch desktop you want to run (use).Select Gnome (gdm) and you should be fine.
