Screen goes blank after ubuntu loading screen

Asked by dsdxp

I have a HP laptop and have Vista, XP, and Ubuntu loaded. I just recently installed ubuntu (had to use VGA mode for it to work properly, otherwise got a blank screen at installation). Everything installed properly and I use the grub boot manager. When I try loading ubuntu from the grub boot manager, I see the ubuntu loading screen with the progress bar, but after it completes, the screen goes black and nothing happens (no cursor or anything). I don't know anything at all about linux so I'm not sure how to edit anything, but I read about how it may not be completely compatible with my video card. I have an nvidia GeForce Go 6150.

I have also tried recovery mode, and it starts loading (the text starts scrolling down the screen), but it stops after the same lines every time--it talks about how it "fixed" some things, but then it just stops there and nothing more loads.

So, as of right now I cannot get into ubuntu and need any help I can get.

by pressing ctrl+alt + F1/F2/.../F7 you can access various consoles on your system (F7 is the graphics one)

can you check the F1 to see if you can access a textmode login ?

HP laptops are causing a lot of Linux users grief. Do the following:

1. When booting, press ESC to get to the advanced boot options
2. Select the "kernel" line and press 'e'
3. Add these options to the end of the line: "noapic noapci nolapic noirqpoll nosmp" and press ENTER
4. Ubuntu should load up properly.
5. Edit your boot options while in Ubuntu to permanently make the changes in step 3 (add those parameters to your boot file - menu.lst)
