There is sound but no sound applet or preferences on lucid (10.04)

Asked by memetali

I have recently upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. I have the sound in every application, but I cannot reach to sound settings. There is no icon on the upper tray. I followed many forums, but none of them solved my problem. I also try to reach the settings from system> preferences > sound, but nothing happens and a window says "answer is waited from sound system" [I am translating it from Turkish, so it won't be exactly what the English version would say]. I can only reach alsa-mixer from the terminal, which is not sufficient for all my needs. Because I cannot switch to HDMI output from there. Ay answer would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi :)

Try a right-click on the top panel/taskbar and "Add to panel" then look down the list for a "Notification Area". This is the only volume control i can find at the moment.

It might be worth working through the medibuntu page to get other multimedia issues sorted out and open up a few of the medibuntu repositories
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

I was wondering if you have also posted this question in Turkish because we do have people from all over he world helping in here and the chances are that someone could answer you in Turkish :)

Please let us know how this goes!
Good luck and regards from

Press ALT+F2
type: gnome-volume-control-applet
Press ENTER

If it doesn't load again after reboot then add the item to your startup items

I have added "Notification Area" to the panel and had a sound icon, but it doesn't control the sound at all. The medibuntu packages didn't provide me anything and solve my problem.

I have tried alt+f2 solution before and also adding the item from the startup application, it also didn't work. However, I have Gnome-alsa mixer which is only an interface for alsa-mixer and does nothing more than what alsa-mixer from the terminal does.

I am not sure if the HDMI output will work without switching to it, because in 9.10 I had to choose HDMI output from the sound settings window. If in 10.04 it works without switching to it then I think I can survive without having sound settings. But it is still strange that the settings are unreachable.

Hi :)

Oh, 9.10 still should have the separate volume dial in the "Add to panel" menu but it only controls 1 of the sliders in the mixer, either the PCM or Front i think (not main! lol). If you are upgrading to 10.04 then probably it would be wise to sort the sound in 9.10 first but i would probably just skip that and upgrade. Before upgrading it is usually best to try a LiveCd of the new release just in case there are problems on your system or in case you don't like it. The 10.04 has gone to a much more "Mac" look rather than the "Windows" (lack of) style it aimed for previously. It is possible to switch the buttons back, just ask.

To sort the sound issues i think the next step is to work through
