Ubuntu 7.04 will not shut down

Asked by Evan

After clicking on shutdown the system starts to shut down but after the Ubuntu logo turns off I just get a black screen with a few lines of text saying: *Unmounting Tempory filesystem (ok), *Deactivating Tempory Swap...(ok), *Unmounting local filesystem (ok), *Will now halt.

The cursor just sits there blinking. I have left it for an hour but the system would not shut down by its self, I have to hold in the power button for several seconds to make the system turn off. Ubuntu 6.06 was OK.

I have a system based around a VIA LN10000EG motherboard (http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/motherboards.jsp?motherboard_id=473)

The system starts up again OK, its just Inconvenient.
