Keyboard timing, badly out, it rushes & lags

Asked by handy

My keyboard timing problem = spontaneously speeds up & lags, making typing all but impossible, without turning off keyboard key repeat, then the lag is bad, but typing is possible.

Tthhhhhhhhhheeeee pppprobbbbbbbbleeeeemmmm looks like that.

I have used multiple Linux distro's without experiencing the problem,
I have this problem in Edgy & Feisty, therefore I must use Dapper.
FreeBSD & Solaris are free of it too. I have installed Sabayon 3.4a, & it has the same problem, I have found that by turning off the USB controller in the BIOS, the keyboard works correctly, I tried all combinations of the USB settings in the BIOS, to no avail.

The keyboard is PS/2. I have tried multiple keyboards, both USB & obviously PS/2. Turning off the USB controller is the only thing that works,

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939

The 8 USB ports are controlled by the nForce 3 Ultra, chip.

I hope this information helps you solve this long standing bug.

Thanks for your efforts, even if you don't get to this one, you are all doing a fantastic job! :-D

Had this problem with a similar motherboard and a USB KVM, solved it by attaching a cheap device to connect several USB 2.0 devices to a single USB 2.0 port between the motherboard and the KVM.

As usual, your mileage may vary

I had to turn my USB controller off completely in the BIOS to allow any keyboard - PS/2 or USB to work properly. I don't think the above answer is relevant to my problem.

What I did do today, which sidesteps the bug, is install a PCI USB card, which allows to use my USB devices without interfering with my keyboards functionality.

I have lost nothing in this situation, except a fair amount of time solving the problem, & a little money on the USB card.

The Bug still stands though.

The bug may be caused not by the OS, but by something else, like the motherboard used. If you enter this search request to Google: "site:forums.nvidia.com usb problems" (without the quotes), you will get many pages describing similar problems with motherboards based on nForce3 and nForce4 chipsets. Many of these problems are not specific to a particular OS or distro, but apparently caused by something in the hardware

I do believe that the problem is between the OS & the nForce3 chip.

I don't know who owns the problem though?

I would think that if I can use other Linux distro's & Ubuntu's Dapper, PC-BSD, PCLOS windows, Solaris, all without problems with keyboard timing, that the problem is due to the particular version of the OS doing something that does not work properly with the nForce3 chip.

I only have this problem with Edgy, Feisty & Sabayon 3.4a.

That is as far as my logic goes, I am not a kernel hacker. :-)

So, you suggest I accept that the bug is in the nForce3 chip, & call this a Problem Solved?

I had a similar if not the same problem with Windows XP SP2 and Fedora (5?) too, so, even if this is not a hardware problem, I believe it is not specific to Ubuntu. Regarding Linux, it may be specific to a particular range of kernel versions. Hopefully it will be fixed, or a workaround for the hardware problem will be found. Until then, feel free to use your workaround, or try my workaround, or leave this question open to let someone else add their knowledge to it.

With best wishes

I have a very similar problem. When typing, the letters stop appearing on the screen for a while. For example, just then, everything from "stop" through to "while" came up after a delay. I just keep typing and hope. Sometimes I have to go back and delete what I've written and the delete key hangs. That's most annoying because you don't know how much you've deleted. I also had a problem with repeating letters. I got rid of that by deselecting the "key presses repeat when key is held down" box in the keyboard set up. However, I feel that I shouldn't have had to do that. There is something wrong somewhere. This all started on or about 6th February. It was ok up to that date. I've replaced the keyboard with two others and the problem is the same, so it's not a keyboard issue. This is a dual-boot pc, so I've run windows on the same hardware and the fault is not there. I've also got the distro disk from the Christmas edition of the Linux mag, so I can run Mandriva One from the CD without installing it and the fault is not there either. It's only on Ubuntu. Something, somewhere, isn't right.

I just installed version 8.10 and the key repeat rate is insane. I had it adjusted all the way down before I upgraded, so I can't adjust it down any more. I was aware of the delay/jump effect in earlier versions. It still does that.

Can you help with this problem?
