Firmware Upgrade Needed

Asked by Tony Bear

I just installed Ubuntu from a cd. When it first loaded, it said something like "firmware drives not installed, please go to (gives URL), then gave a bunch of errors, then Gnome TRIED to load, and failed. the desktop loaded, complete with video and audio, it loaded the "get graphics card drivers' which installed fine.

I'm trying to find the URL the first boot screen gave me, but it no longer loads anymore to tell me where to go. Of course the Compaq site gives no linux support so I can't go there to find them. I'm on a Compaq PresarioR3000 laptop. I am completely new to Linux, I used SuSe linux on this laptop and it works flawlessly but I like Ubuntu better and i'd like to find out how (using xterminal only) how to find and install the drivers it said I need, or how I can view that message again without it going away in a flash so that I can copy that URL. Again: From terminal (Since Gnome doesn't work right). I tried typing in firefox, and walla! At least it loaded so I could post this message! lol.

Oh, I downloaded the latest desktop edition when I got the error. I'm now burning the Laptop edition to see if it has my drivers. But I'd still like to know how to get the firmware updates, where to find them and install from command line only. I assume it found them since it told me where to go the first time it booted, but never showed up since, and it was so fast it was a flash...

My laptop has ran Redhat, Open SuSe, BSD, and Debian previously with no issues, so i know it's compatible with Linux

Hi :)

I am sure that message must be in a log file somewhere. Perhaps re-post a question about which log-files might show installer errors?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi ?

Did you find the log-files? Did they really help? Please let me know where and how if you have time. I think re-posting the question was the best part of my answer, to get more new people interested again

Congrats and regards from
Tom :)

Hi Tom,

First off let me begin with an apology: I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I am having trouble navigating this site and finding my questions I have asked and etc. I never found the log files, nor figured out how to find them in the first place. I erased my rw cd, and wrote Ubuntu Linux laptop edition, and re-did the installation. It went smooth, and everything runs fine. This is the first linux that got my Broadcom wireless card to work right from the start as well. Again, I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you! Simply installing the laptop edition worked. Though I don't like it nearly as much as the desktop edition, it works great, with all the features. :-)

Hi :)

Don't worry about not having replied sooner! The only concern is if a question is unresolved because Launchpad does not have a good way of dealing with threads older than a couple of days and so sometimes questions need to be re-posted.

I am really glad to hear you sorted this problem out by using the Netbook Remix, that really is the main thing :) Since it is a new install of Ubuntu it is worth first running through the Medibuntu guide to try to sort all the multimedia issues for your country or at least lay the groundwork for solving issues
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
This gives you the proprietary codecs ("non-free" but still free in most countries) and also sets up repositories with things like google-earth and stuff.

If the Netbook Remix is still not quite the interface you would most like then you can always add the full ubuntu-desktop on top. Now that you have the drrivers sorted via the Netbook Remix this 'should' work

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Then at your next login (perhaps use "Switch User"?) change the session type to "Gnome Ubuntu" and trial it for just one session before committing to it.

This site is fairly tricky to navigate at first but you soon get used to it. At first i used to bookmark a lot of stuff in here but now that i am used to it i find i have access to some quite amazing stuff. Forums are always tricky to get used to and it is worth having a go with at least 3. This one,
http://www.ubuntuforums.com
and a more general linux forum
http://www.linuxquestions.org
Launchpad does have some amazing stuff in it tho so i would tend to keep trying to get used to this one. Note that while this is sent to you as an email it includes a link directly into this thread. The particular link to look for in this email is the one with the questions number at the end, in this case 110406

If the buttons at the top of pages being on the Mac side (left) rather than the Windows side (right) is annoying then please feel free to post a new question about that
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
and, of course, about anything else too.

I hope something here helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
