avi plug-in for movie player is missing

Asked by Barry Demers

Using Ubuntu upgrade to 10.04. Earlier version(9.x) worked, though sporadically.
The link below gives me a message that application/xml decoder is needed. Can't find one when search invoked. Universe and multiverse are enabled in Synaptic.

Try the mozilla ppa, it may help:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

Seems to relate to this bug:

Have you install ubuntu-restricted-extras ?

I have all off the Ubuntu repositories enabled except for source code. A
restart on firefox gave same results. I watched the software being updated
in the terminal, I restarted firefox, went to my page, got the codec missing
message, searched for codec, did not find application/xml decoder. Wish I
could say that all is now well, but that is not the case.

I'd log a bug. Does it happen in other browsers?

This also happens with chrome. I just now tried opera. Opera told me that quicktime needs to be downloaded. So it appears then that I need to chase down quicktime.. This unfortunately leaves me still floundering, at least so far.

Before doing this, I added several packages using synaptic. I no longer get a codec error (yah!!!!!!!!!) but video doesn't start. Clicking on field gives a message "waiting for video" So, not quite there yet.

Hi :)

Working through this guide sometime after upgrading to a new release of Ubuntu or after an initial install usually fixes most multimedia problems

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

it is also worth installing mplayer and vlc if you have enough space, they don't take up much space and both bring in extra functionality that might be handy

sudo apt-get install mplayer

sudo apt-get install vlc

good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Wierd. I don't know what format they are using! I can usually see almost anything very easily but just got a greyish, greeny, brown image for their live-feed. Their videos were fine and used a very stand wmv format. has anyone asked them what format they are using yet?

From latest suggestion here is terminal dialog:

barry@barry-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install mplayer
[sudo] password for barry:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
mplayer is already the newest version.
mplayer set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 6 not upgraded.
barry@barry-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install vlc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
vlc is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 6 not upgraded.
barry@barry-desktop:~$

In addition, I had previously been through the Medibuntu

Does the line about being set to manually installed mean anything, like a missing file, maybe? If so, how do I safely delete Mplayer and then auto install it to make sure that dependencies are met?

After reading Tom's last message allow me to comment that you are close. Currently I have only a black view window. In my previous install, I had 2 different modes. Most of the time the screen was a solid green, mode 1. Sometimes the screen would initially be green with the color variations that Tom mentioned, kind of swirling around. After a number of seconds the broadcast image would appear. I was of the opinion that the swirling period was buffering. Perhaps Tom may want to wait a minute or so to see if the image appears. Also I would be interested to see how his install varies from mine, as I believe he is closer to connection than I am.

Hi :)

I think it's the "and 6 not upgraded" that is most bothering. I seem to remember fixing that by booting up to the Grub menu and choosing "recovery mode" then "fix broken packages". I had tried the one in Synaptic but the one in recovery mode seemed to be able to get past some blockage.

Synaptic and the other package managers all use the same command-line tools to deal with dependencies. The only real difference between them is the way they present the information in the gui. To get a handy help guide (a quick cheat-sheet) on how to use any command-line instruction just try "-h" or "--help" as a tag after the command. Try

apt-get -h

to see some interesting uses of "apt-get". Oh and perhaps pipe it through "more" as follows

apt-get -h | more

On an English keyboard the | key is between the "z" and the left-hand shift key. The "more" stops stuff scrolling off the top of the screen until you have had chance to read it. It might be worth doing things like

sudo apt-get autoclean

or more relevantly

sudo apt-get remove mplayer

I did keep the web page open for quite a few minutes but i take your point and have left that page open so that while i'm out it gets plenty of time. I know well from memories of Windows days what effects you get from buffering. Mostly there is either disjointed jerky swirling movements whereas i just get a very static wrong colour.

If it gets anywhere then i can fairly easily let you have a list of all the packages on my machine & i think we can use some file comparer to look for differences. In Synaptic go to
File - "Save markings as ... "
and in the dialogue box box tick the tick-box at the bottom to "Save all markings not just changes" to get a tiny useful text-file showing a list of all the packages you have installed. It can be very handy when you get a new hard-drive or want to re-create the exact same install on a different machine using a different version of Ubuntu, or in cases like this i guess. I wouldn't bother with this right now as i still don't seem to be getting any results on that page. We shall see how it goes later.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

It's more like the mode1 described by Barry. It's not solid green tho. The bottom of the picture is white and the top dark green. The colour changes smoothly as you look from top to bottom.

Also i don't understand what we can do using the log?

I did find the cam forums and it might be worth you registering in there

Hi :)

The chap said that normally people just install QuickTime and it works. I think he is going to pass the question to technical staff later, if he gets enough time. So, i installed "tons of bloat" and even restarted my whole machine to make sure all the services got completely re-started but still nothing. The gxine-plugin for firefox tried to start playing it in the external gxine gui but gave me this error message

"The xine engine failed to start.
No demuxer found - stream format not recognised."

So, does anyone know if QuickTime have moved to a newer format in an attempt to lock non-apple users out?

Like you, Tom, I have loaded up so much that I have lost complete control on what's going on here. I intend to reinstall with a fresh install cd instead of the update procedure. I have been updating for 3-4 versions now, maybe more. To my way of thinking, the mere fact that I run as well as I do with all the dependancies, etc. is enough to make me a Ubuntu poster child. Regarding a new version of Quicktime, I tend to doubt it. I say this based on my ability to get the site on my last version, 9.10. Within an hour of the update I tried the website without success. I think it is on the Ubuntu side, not Apple's, but with the thousands of updated, deleted, newly added, etc files, and a piss poor knowledge of how all this ties together, I'm at a loss. It'll take someone better equipped than I am.

Of course, I could make a snide comment regarding the development of the site itself, but that would be inappropriate.

I did review and run several suggestions from the restrictedformats howto. Most, but not all, of the suggestions were already present, and now I am up to date, I believe, with all that is listed. I then did a restart on Firefox.

Below is a copy from my .xsession-errors file. To generate this file I opened the web page causing my concern and clicked on the play button , waited for the connecting...playing...idle message to sequence, then repeated several more times. Interpreting what is in this file is not fully within my grasp, so some help would be greatly appreciated. Example: I have no idea what rmda or mmdr mean.

Hi :)

The restricted-extras package did install 21 packages i didn't already have! Also i checked in Firefox - Tools - AddOns - Plugins
and now i am working through disabling them and restarting firefox. Since this is not really a priority for me it could take me a week or so to work through them. I found that my QuickTime plugin is version 7.6.6 but i think i might have said that in my last posting.

Thanks Sam for making me check that RestrictedFormats page, it seems that it did do some extra stuff on top of the Medibuntu stuff & is worth going through separately.

I think the Medibuntu page need that link added and also something a bit more definite about installing adobe flash-player (or giving the option of installing gnash & swfdec-gnome as an alternative). Is anyone up to the challenge?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ok, don't what's the issue in 10.04, maybe log a bug.
On Karmic I took this link

and opened with Totem without any issue.
http://www.pic-upload.de/view-5612840/eagle.png.html
I don't have restricted extras, medibuntu or any other stuff installed.
The only extra packages I have are gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and ugly.

In meantime I will attempt to send a bug report

Hi :)

I think that was meant to be an answer for another question. It is a neat site for checking to see if a particular website is having trouble "right now" or if it's just your machine that is somehow creating a problem

I liked your bug-report and marked it because it affects me too :)

Regards from
Tom :)

Barry,
the messages means what it says, that the website which is supposed to stream is down and doesn't stream.

Still down, hence the stream can't work as long as they have it in the source text of the main page.
Result: no verification possible regarding Firefox, Totem or whatever.

Sam, I have the ability to see this on 9.10 (Just there a minute ago). How do you explain that?

I can't. No luck on Karmic here. Stream page is still down. Maybe it's in your cache?

No, its live. Now, I will say this. It does take a number of
attempts(varies) to get streaming to happen. See posts from others, they
have same phenomena. Perhaps you are only making a single attempt. I have a
bug report placed, by the way. In the meantime, I will not remove 9.10 from
my main workstation.

Hi :)

9.10 still has just under a years worth of support left so keeping it, perhaps as part of a dual-boot, perhaps in a virtual-machine, seems like an excellent plan. The title of the bug-report makes it look like a very minor issue but if it was re-named to something like "QuickTime doesn't work in 10.04" then it might get more attention. It seems they are using a very standard QuickTime format that presents no trouble at all to Windows and Mac users. Errors on the page don't seem to slow them down, it's only a problem for 10.04 people.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

@Barry
I've seen the bug report, but I'd have uploaded Apport collection after the failed procedure loading the stream.
Makes the triage easier for devs.
In case you'd like to add one type in CLI:
apport-collect 579685

> It does take a number of attempts(varies) to get streaming to happen

Yep, I've just tried one time and even before that verified if the webpage is still down.
Is address of the stream the same as in your previous output from .xsession-errors?

@Tom
You were asking for quicktime, this bookmarked link in Firefox opened Totem for me without issues (Karmic).
But works also with Lucid LiveCD session, when gstreamer bad+ugly and ffmpeg were installed before.

Simple websearch finds thousands of testpages:

Sam, the address hasn't changed. I have NEVER gotten the stream to function on first connect. Sometimes, after 20 or so attempts, I give up and come back later. Then, with who knows how many tries, it works. Pretty flakey, but Eventually I get something. This has never been the case with 10.04. With 9.10 the display is green with the telltale of an incoming stream being seen as best described as black splotches, turning into video after several seconds. A solid green is a no go. Black splotches, you have incoming. With 10.04 screen is white, always. Could very well be that this means nothing, but its all I have to go on.
Be nice if there was another site that we could use for testing, one that was more substantial, but so far, this is the only one I've had issues with. (I don't get out much)

Me too. But to be honest, if a page makes trouble because of using restricted formats, I don't usually care and say good bye. With few exceptions, I wrote emails about the issue which lead nowhere.

yes its the same issue here I am facing in my software but your issue is looking pretty easy and simple so you can see here https://starsbiopoint.com/ and try to solve it.

Can you help with this problem?
