DVD ROM and CDwriter's problems

Asked by Medya

Hey , I have a problem with my DVD Drive and also CD Writer in Ubuntu linux.

I have problem Reading some of Mp3 and VCD and also normal data CDs ,
when I put the CD in the DVD Drive or even CD writer , it shows strange files or strange names, sometimes I have to put the CD , 5-6 times in the drive to read it .
and sometimes never read its , I dont have this problem with all CDs, some CDs just work fine .

but I should also mention that those CDs who have problem in Ubuntu, have no problem in windows XP .

I want to also mention , when I was writing a CD in ubuntu , [it used to work fine and write CDs Beautifully] but one time, it hanged and I heard strange sound from the CD writer ,
then after that my cd writer broken down and it doesn't work anymore..even in windows.
when I put CD in it, it hear strange sounds .

do you think it was because of my using the cd writer in ubuntu ? after I fix the CD-Writer , should I avoid using it in ubuntu again ?

and what to do so I can read my CDs with problem using my DVD Rom in ubuntu ? I have included a screenshot where you can see a CD which normally show 15 folders full of mp3 , shows 3 files with ???????????????? names.

My DVD Rom Drive is , ASUS 16X
My CD Writer is Sumsung 52x32x52

Hi,

With what software did you burn those cds which don't work with ubuntu?

The CD blasting off thing happens when you use low quality cds or cds with a small crack on its inner edge. The cds rotate inside the drive at ridiculous speeds, they also get heated up slighlty and the crack widens until the whole cd rips apart and your drive get damaged. (When it happened to me, my drive did not get damaged, but lots of friends say their drive became useless when this happened)

There is nothing wrong with ubuntu. I read and write all my cds with ubuntu. I have never found anything wrong.
