I have upgraded from version 9.1 to 10.04 but the modem applet no longer works how can I repair the modem applet?

Asked by Mark Jones

I was using version 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and everything worked fine. The modem instantly started immediatly on bootup. I had set it up initially by right clicking the connection icon and setting it up. It instantly recognised the make and model of the modem dongle, and just a few clicks, it was set up perfectly. After uprgrading to version 10.04, to my horror, that no matter what I did, the applet would not recognise my modem, and I now cannot get online with version 10.04. I am now using a Live CD of version 9.1, but of course this is not suitable for more complex internet operations such as downloading from you tube, or watching the iplayer etc. Please help me to fix the modem applet so it works as well as the version 9.1. Perhaps even find me a copy of the connection applet from version 9.1 which i could replace the current one with? would that work?? Please help someone, so I can get back online again with out resorting to the Live CD which is not as satisfactory as having it installed on the hard drive.

You can download and install wicd from http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/wicd .Be sure that you download all dependencies (mark with red ball) and when you are going to install install them first.

I have successfully installed the wicd software, but it does not provide Ubuntu with dongle detection. It only provides wireless network connection. The dongle I am using is a T-Mobile dongle made by Huewei, and it is connected via the USB port. The applet, (nm-applet in usr/bin) detected this device at bootup in Ubuntu 9.10, and it was configured by an icon on the top toolbar, but version 10.04 does not. Is there a dongle detection applet I can download? Or a driver?

Try to reinstall network manager by typing

sudo apt-get install network-manager network-manager-gnome

This should install network manager and remove wicd.

Can you help with this problem?
