Engineering drawing and 3D modelling

Asked by KKevin901

In Ubuntu (not via WINE) environment, if there any engineering drawing program that have engineering drawing and 3-D modeling function?

I consider all version Window platforms are unstable and very resource demanding. I am using SolidWorks; with no choice that I stuck in Window environment. It is a powerful software can provide tools for industrial design, engineering drawing, 3-D modeling design and analysis. I heard the Pro-E is running under Unix environment but that is the propriety toy for big corporation, not for common people. It would be wonderful if there has a similar counterpart program in Linux environment.

Much appreciate for any advise.

Thanks

There's a excellent program called Blender, you can find in Ubuntu Software Center. As far as I now SolidWorks is a CAD 3D software, There is also Bricscad, a program for 3D modeling which will be available for Ubuntu soon, but is proprietary.

Thank for the info.

I did try the Blender. It seems more on graphic design and animation rather than engineering design drawing/modeling.

Checked also the recommended BricsCAD website, it looks like the slim version competitor to AutoCAD. I like their clear and simple layout, I can imagine it would be easy to learn and migrate from other design drawing software. However, it is not for Linux yet, their website claim they shall have it "soon" but not firm schedule. A bit pricey and different charge in different packages. Really wish there can have an usable engineering design drawing program in Ubuntu environment.

Thanks

You might want to try FreeCAD. It's a promising project for a modern 3D CAD program, with support for different workbenches, though I think it's not really ready for production yet.
The version in the repository is not the latest either. In their sourceforge project page, they have a deb package for lucid.

Another alternative you can try is brlcad. It is a software used on production projects, but it seems very old school unix CAD program. It seems that it isn't on the repository.

For 2D only drawings, I suggest QCAD.

Unfortunately, I think that currently it doesn't really exist a good FOSS alternative to high end CAx/PLM systems (Catia, ProE, NX) or even lower end MCAD ones (SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Inventor...)

Can you help with this problem?
