windows locked into position, how do I change?

Asked by Larry Jordan

Just upgraded to 10.04 the other day. Today, I noticed I can't move my windows. Also changed the theme back to a gnome type, instead of Emerald, not sure if that is reason. But problem is that when I open either Firefox or Evolution the window opens in the upper left corner of the screen and cannot be moved. How do I restore this ability? Also, there are no buttons for minimize, maximize, or close. What might I have done wrong?

Ok; I find now that there is a setting under 'System->Preferences->Windows' that allows me to move these windows if I hold down the 'Alt' key and use the mouse.... can't I put this back to older settings and just be able to move them with the mouse by holding down the left button while the pointer is over the title bar?

Depends which window manager you're using now, Metacity or Compiz.
Config settings for both can be done through gconf-editor.
btw. if you're using Compiz, the option composite in Metacity should be disabled.

If you are using compiz then yuo will need to enable the move window plugin. Make sure you have ccsm installed with:

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Then press ALT+F2 and run: ccsm

In the dialogue you can hunt around for the move windows plugin (or search) to enable the thing you need
