Upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04, have no menu bar

Asked by raylsimmonds

Upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04. Now I have no Menu bar at the top of the screen. At boot-up of computer there is two error messages before the user's sign-in box appears:
Error: No suitable mode found
Error: Unknown command 'terminal'
So far the only command that I found to work is 'ALT F1' to give me the Program Menu.
I have nothing to shut-down or restart the computer.
Thanks.

If you login as a brand new user, does the menu bar work then?

When you say "menu bar". do you mean the bar at the top and bottom of the desktop?

You could also run:

sudo ln -s /usr/bin/gnome-terminal /usr/bin/terminal

in an ALT+F2 dialogue.

If I login as a brand new user, after boot-up or restart the menu bar
works!
If I were to log-off from my own "partition" and another user were to
log-on, then no menu bar!

The fix worked! Each user has their own program menu bar at the top of their screens.
Thank you,
