At first check if one of the visible icons is the network manager applet it’s appearance change a bit from the last version.
Then rearrange the order of the fields on the right of the panel. Under some rare conditions some other applets are blocking the space for the network manage icon. You will have to unlock some of them.

hello again,

Sorry for taking so long, in ubuntu 10.04 lucid link I have an icon that is has two arrows one up and the other down. It's at the top right of the desktop. You can't find anything like that?

When I left click on the icon I see my network interfaces. With a right click, there's the enable networking along with other options. You have nothing of the sort?

Use a Terminal and run this command, what's the result?
"dpkg-query -W network-manager-gnome"
