Did you install Ubuntu on another partition or just inside Windows?
After installing 10.04 on a second drive it messed up my primary drive running Win 7.

Had the same thing but after my first attempt I just had a blinking cursor when I selected Win 7. Ubuntu booted just fine.
I selected all devices for Grub.
I then (with the Windows 7 DVD) booted and started the repair.
Selected Command prompt after a failed automatic repair.

Type the following;
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

This should get you back your Windows.

I apologise that I have no exact details to present, though the experiences I have had over the last 24 hours are worth recounting.
 I had 9.10 running under Windows 7 on HP laptop CQ60 with 4GB memory and plenty od disc space. It was dual-boot

When I loaded Ubuntu yesterday, I took the option to install 10.04 LTS. Files were downloaded and the install began. After a few minutes a pop-up came up saying a module could not be found , and the situation could not be recovered. There was only an OK button, I clicked it.,,, things proceeded it seemed.

 A message said the install would take another 28 minutes having come down from 4 hours; it said the same thing 40 minutes later. A console screen appeared to be filled with the same line, another warning, in fact it was the same line being output all the time.... it looked like a loop to me.

I could not interrupt it so I powered the machine off,,, then things got really nasty!!!

I tried to boot up Ubuntu 9.10 again but got an error. Thereafter I couldnt boot up Windows, I tried to boot up Puppy Linux from USB ,,,, this worked to an extent. I tried loading Windows recovery from disc and also from the files on hard disc. I also tried AVG recovery disc. Most of these efforts were blighted by the machine powering off with no warning. This powering off did not happen at the same place. Sometimes Puppy or AVG were stable, other times it would power off while I was typing in the Power on password.

Then somehow I managed to load Windows recovery from disc and it was stable. I decided to backup my system to external hard-drive. I left this running while I got some kip.

This morning the backup had completed successfully. I rebooted the system and tried to load Windows. I took the option to recover . It seemed to repair the system successfully and Windows was fine.

Foolishly I decided to try Ubuntu again, I got the same error as before. I then got the powering off problem again.Several times it said Windows was loading files and the powered off at different point in the process. In desperation I tried 'the really big switch', I removed the battery from my laptop. I then replaced it and managed to boot up Windows recovery from hard disc. I ran CHKDSK .. no problems. I managed to boot up Windows again and took the option to recover. Again it said repairs were being done,

Once Windows was loaded, the first thing I did was uninstall Ubuntu. I no longer have dual-boot option. My machine is stable now.

I feel severely bruised by all this. I will try Ubuntu again, but not til my bruises have healed and I can see happy entries in this discussion forum.

pals, are u using 'wubi' (installer under windows) !? in case yes, it's not good idea with upgrading.
wubi is ok for demonstration purpose with fully workable ubuntu's features.

so, i propose to u create live-cd/dvd/usb and proceed with installation. during installation, u can easily create new partition for ubuntu.

after 1st boot with ubuntu, u can run

$ sudo update-grub

and grub will be update with possibility to boot with windows.

Vitaliy and Kenji, I had a dual boot setup and running with Ubuntu 9.10, which was very stable. I have been running version 10.04 beta on a different computer to try it out. I was happy with the way the beta was running, so when the release version came out I wanted to update the computer running 9.10 to 10.04. It was during the download that a window popped up asking for me to select what to run in grub, I did n ot select the right item and caused the problem. Vitaliy, I tried your fix first because it was in linux but it did not solve the problem. Kenji, your solution worked to restore the windows os but I will need to reinstall the Ubuntu os as grub is not loading. I am happy that this is not a problem, setting up the dual boot is fairly simple.
