Looks like a failed upgrade attempt. It is not possible to do a successful upgrade from 9.04 to 10.04. You can only upgrade between 8.04 LTS and 10.04 LTS or between 9.10 and 10.04.

I recommend doing a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 from a LiveCD session. Please first test all functionality (wireless, sound, etc....) in the LiveCD session before installing. Please make sure to NOT delete (and do NOT format) the partition containing your /home directory. Also make a back up of your personal data before installing Ubuntu 10.04 (if you decide on doing that).

Please read this:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades

"Before You Start

    *

You can directly upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS ("Lucid Lynx") from Ubuntu 9.10 ("Karmic Koala") or from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS ("Hardy Heron"). This page contains instructions for both. (see UpgradeNotes)
    * Be sure that you have all updates applied to your current version of Ubuntu before you upgrade.
    *

Before upgrading it is recommended that you read the release notes for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which document caveats and workarounds for known issues in this version.

If you have a version of Ubuntu other than 8.04 LTS or 9.10, please see UpgradeNotes for information on how to upgrade. "
