How can I rerun the LTS upgrade to Lucid

Asked by Jose L. VG

On a test server with quite a lot of services running for testing and development purposes I did a Hardy to Lucid upgrade a couple of days after Lucid was 'supposed' to be released as 'stable'.

The upgrade broke on the package installation phase due to the know flash plugin error. After reboot I managed to fix it manually but the system presents the following symptoms:

1) It takes 3-10 seconds to login after a correct password is given. I see the welcome line with the date inmediately but have to wait for the rest of the login output, including the prompt.

2) The same happens via SSH.

3) Had to fix manually some packages also to get startx to work with the nouveau drivers.

4) Had to fix manually a problem with dbus permissions on messagebus group that prevented jockey-text/gtk from starting.

5) The systems is slower now after the dbus permission fix (it is now too slow to work with, before it was ok except for the login time issue).

6) I get some udev config errors at boot.

I think all problems come from the fact that the upgrade was interrupted half way and the cleanup scripts could not be executed. I basically have a Hardy system with Lucid packages but no cleanup done.

So...

How can I rerun the LTS upgrade to Lucid?

Can I trick the system to be a Hardy again and rerun the upgrade to see if this time it can complete?

Here's a thing you could do as a LAST DITCH only (if nobody replies)

Boot to a Lucid liveCD and run through the installation but when you get to the partitioner choose custom partitioning and setup the partitioning as it currently stands but do NOT select format. This will make the installer install the packages and files over the top of the standing files and MAY get you righted.

That wouldn't do, cause the installer WON'T UPGRADE my packages, just install the basic lucid system on top of it... but if I had postgresql already setup and configured (for instance) it won't detect that it had to install it, and it won't appear on the DEB package database. Or am I wrong?

Can you help with this problem?
