Absolute novice wants to know hoe to install 10.04 LTS

Asked by allistair

I am not very computer literate. Very much a novice. At the moment I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop. I have purchased a CD with 10.04 LTS Desktop 32 bit on it. On reading the info on the website I purchased it from, it says that it is not to be used for upgrading. On contacting them they say an alternate CD is needed for upgrading.

1/ Will I be upgrading or starting fresh with 10.04 LTS ?

2/ What CD should I use ?

3/ Are there any step by step instructions on the web somewhere, in understandable novice language, that I can follow to install or upgrade to 10.04 LTS ?

4/ Will it overwrite the 9.10 or does it put a separate complete new installation on my hard drive ?

5/ If it is a complete new installation how do I remove the old 9.10 ?

6/ How do I transfer the extra programs like Gimp etc I have on 9.10 to 10.04 ?

Thanks Allistair

1) It is better to do a fresh install, rather than upgrade.
2) The 10.4
3) Go to: http://ubuntu-manual.org/ and get the manual
4) If you tell it to "use the whole disk it will completely overwrite". If you want to save anything from your Home you should save it to an external USB disk first
5) You don't it will just overwrite.
6) You dont, you just install through the Package Manager
