can't access my expansion USB Seagate hard drive.

Asked by Maintech

My USB expansion drive is seen by the system but will not mount. I saved my /home directory to it and then upgraded 9.10 to 10.04. The upgrade was not as successful as I had hoped so I did a fresh install. After installing I went to access my hard drive to move my /home files back to the internal hard drive. My expansion drive will not mount now. It will mount in Vista and on my wife's computer running 10.04. There isn't anything wrong with the drive and it uses FAT32. The error I get is this:

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0).
Failed to mount '/dev/sdf1': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

There is something wrong with the method of mounting.

Use GParted to see configuration of disk, and report which file system is discovered by GParted.
You could need to install ntfs tools via Synaptic, to see content of disk.

GParted reports that it is ntfs instead of fat32. I have all the ntfs tools and that is listed in Synaptic already installed. When I use Disk Utility to view the drive it gives much information including S.M.A.R.T. status which shows healthy. I can click on the "Check and repair Filesystem" button and it shows there is no issue with the filesystem. When I click the "Mount Volume" button it gives the same error as listed in my previous post. What is causing 10.04 to not mount it when it mounted perfectly under 9.10?

Had to use mount manager. The permissions were not correct and the people allowed to mount it were non-existent. It now mounts correctly and I have restored my home directory.
