No, there is no systems restore point in Ubuntu, for what I know.

Can you explain context of second question ?
Are you trying to update to Lucid from Karmic, a fresh install or something else ?

When I go in to add and remove software to add like java6-jre it searches it's data base to install it.
But it seems that my software data base is empty. Or acts like it.
When I type in java6 then enter it says:
The package list needs to be rebuilt.
This should have been done by the backend automatically.
Details:
Package cache could not be opened

Thank you for your time.

In https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto#Managing%20Repositories, I find:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f

Do also a "ls /var/apt/cache" if it doesn't work and post result.

I'm in England, and calling US will be costly, and moreover I'm a french and talking english is not easy for me.

The failure on command
    ls
is very surprising.
Can you type
    cd && ls
and post result.

N.B. "" are only to separate command from rest of text. Don't type "".
I'll have a look tomorow on package management.
It's late now.

I copied your command "cevin@RocknRoll:~$ Is -l /var/apt/cache" and I get at start a "upper-case i" instead of a "lower-case l".
Can you retry with a "lower-case l".
In Launchpad font, both have same glyph!

The fact you have not gedit is really surprising. I start to ask myself if your software configuration is not a perfect mess!
After which operations problems start to come ?
