how to test ubuntu 9.10 alert volume?

how to test ubuntu 9.10 alert volume?
in gnome-volume-control i do not see play test sound button. i just now know only with switch user, and entering wrong password. how can i test it? it is too loud when i try to use headphone.

now i think that is other, because it is general for all users. how to configure that general volume? this is additional question.
