b43legacy-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43legacy/ucode2.fw" not found or load failed -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4303 802.11b Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4301] (rev 02) not working on Asus L4500R laptop in Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04
Good day,
Need help with connecting to WLAN on my Prolink-H6300G. I just installed Ububtu remix 9.04 on me laptop Asus L4500R. Everything works perfect(including wired LAN) but that it cannot recognise/connect to the WLAN. It worked perfectly when I used Windows XP, so I must be doing something wrong.
Went to Network Manager, clicked on "connect to hidden wireless connection:, did the setting and authentication key WPA & WPA2 and clicked on connect - it showed wireless disconnected.
On the menu side - wireless is enabled.
This is the settings on my wireless modem
SSID Index : 1
Broadcast SSID : Yes
SSID : Prolink-H6300G 802.11b+g
Authentication Type : WPA-PSK
Encryption : TKIP
Pre-Shared Key : xxxxxxxxx (8~63 ASCII characters or 64 hexadecimal characters)
Wireless Address Filter : Deactivated
I sure would appreciate help on this folks - it would be sad fer me to have to revert back to XP. The start up, desktop and interface on this is just soo perfect, that even a novice would find it a synch to use it.
It need be, i can be contacted via email : <email address hidden>
Hoping that someone out there is able to help me with this.
Have a good day
James R

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Firstly thanks soo much fer the quick response.
Have done as above instructions - but when its ask fer me password, I am not able to type it in. The keys on the keypad don't work. Attached an external USB keyboard and still don't work. Also tried to type text inmanually from keypad/keyboard still unable to.
As you can see, the keypad/keyboard works just fine here as well as when i used it in the open office app.
Any ideas what i'm doing wrong?
Appreciate yer patience and my apologies fer any inconvenience caused.
Thanks - James R

When it asks for the Ubuntu password, simply enter the password you use to log into Ubuntu. It is perfectly normal that Ubuntu does not show the password you are typing. The password you enter is not displayed for security reasons. Just enter the password and the press the <ENTER> key. If the password is correct, Ubuntu will accept it.
Please send us the Terminal output of the command I sent you.

Hi Mark, yup - sorry fer my stupidity and the trouble. Herein is the terminal output. Awaiting anxiously fer a solution and finally be able to use the WLAN. My sincerest thanks - James R
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
The error "b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found or load failed" should mean that b43-fwcutter is not installed yet on your pc. And that means that the Broadcom firmware for your wireless card is not loaded or installed yet.
Please proceed with the following commands:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install b43-fwcutter
b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working wired Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it.
The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.
After installing b43-fwcutter, please reboot and retest wireless.
Regards,
Mark

That is strange. It should have worked by now.... Only other thing I can recommend is to do a clean install from scratch of Ubuntu 10.04 which has just been released. Then install b43-fwcutter in Ubuntu 10.04. Then reboot and retest wireless. I have no other suggestions to make.

If that does not help as well, then I suggest installing Linux Mint 8 Helena instead, which includes out-of-the-box support for Broadcom wireless cards:
http://
First test wireless using a Linux Mint 8 LiveCD session before attempting an install.

Have done a new install, also done the updates for the fwcutter via your instructions as well as all other updates thru update manager.
Where hardware drivers are concerned - it shows Broadcom b43legacy driver is activated.
It now at the point where ENABLED WIRELESS is greyed out-maybe there is a solution fer this?
I have installed 10.04 once before but after completion of install and reboot - it just hung. Tried getting a good download of it(Ubuntu Home Page) as well as other sites: Softpedia and torrents but to no avail, maybe you could recommend a link for 10.04?
Will go to the link you posted for Linux Mint 8 and download - thanks.
Would be grateful if you could please afford me another look at a solution - especially the greyed out issue on ENABLE WIRELESS or maybe a USB WIRELESS CARD.
Once again my sincerest thanks fer all the effort, patience and assistance rendered.
Thanks - James R

First test wireless during the Linux Mint 8 LiveCD session. If wireless does not work out-of-the-box during the LiveCD session, then I also recommend buying a wireless USB stick.
Here is a list of Ubuntu compatible wireless cards:
The ASUS WL-167G V2 (USB ID 0b05:1723) wireless USB stick is a good choice.
See here for details:

Hello Mark,
Well I have to tell you that the laptops works jsut fine now. The problem was a faulty wireless card, once I got it changes, it worked like a charm and am now prodly utilizing me Ubuntu 9.10. Did not realize that the wireless card was faulty cuase it worked just fine when using XP.
Anyways, please accept my deepest thanks fer all that you have done, the patience and support that you have provided.
I am now looking forward to a stable version of Lucid Lynx LTS which I can dploy on me desktop.
