booting login fail after upgrade 10.04

Asked by Waluyo Adi Siswanto

I have upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04, after restart however there is a problem. I could not get the booting splash and the login windows of several users as usual, but Linux prompt login.
I can login then after I use the command "startx" I can see the ubuntu environment.
Everytime I shutdown/restart. the login prompt is a plain linux command, then I have to use "startx" again...

How can I get the Login graphical windows again to login?

Thanks

when I reinstall gdm from synaptic, the next reboot will be calling the graphical login. Unfortunately only once, then when the coputer shutdown, it will prompt again to login prompt again.

I guess gdm fail to open on booting? could anyone please help..

Thanks for your help. That's very strange .. I do not have ubuntu-splash.png in the folder.
Perhaps I did make changes. We have backed up important documents.
This computer is so messy. I guess it's time to have fresh installation.
